Pokémon EX Cards

A touch of nostalgia combined with breathtaking illustrations: EX cards are sure to rekindle the Trainer in you!

Released in Japan in September 2011 with the Next Destinies expansion of Black & White, EX cards shook up the TCG meta and marked the start of a new era for the Pokémon card game franchise.

Not to be confused with ex cards (written in lowercase), these Pokémon have far more HP and damage than their predecessors. The Pokémon Company later introduced Mega Evolution EX with the X/Y release, making your Pokémon EX even more powerful and imposing.

What do Pokémon GX cards look like?

You can't miss them: the EX symbol appears just to the right of their name! And as mentioned, their HP and the damage their attacks deal are much higher than the normal average.

Like Legend cards, Pokémon EX give your opponent two Prize cards when Knocked Out, but they don't need to be assembled and can be put straight into play (a strategic revolution that made the key cards of the HeartGold and SoulSilver expansions almost obsolete).

Mega Evolutions have an M to the left of the card name in addition to the EX on the right, and can be played on the EX version of the same Pokémon (much like V and VMAX cards). But be careful: once you Mega Evolve your Pokémon, your turn ends automatically!

As for the artwork, the frame is still there on the classic versions (though the Pokémon slightly breaks out of the frame for a sense of depth), but some cards have a Full Art version (rarer) that drops the frame and showcases your favorite pocket monster across the entire card (the holy grail for any collector)!
