Pokémon PROMO Cards

Get the Japanese cards most coveted by Pokémon TCG collectors in a single click!

They need no introduction: Pokémon Promo cards are the ones that have made the most headlines, notably with auctions reaching six-figure prices!

Their rarity comes from how hard they are to get (limited quantities, released at special events), which makes them hugely popular with the biggest fans of the Japanese franchise.

We'll keep growing our collection so you can easily get the card of your dreams without flying to the land of the rising sun!

How are promotional Pokémon cards distributed?

These cards are rare because they aren't found in boosters / displays like most rare Pokémon cards. Most of the time they're handed out or sold at special, time-limited events (and since they're very popular, you usually have to be quick as stock is quite limited!).

These cards may be handed out, for example, at certain store openings (like the Shibuya Pikachu given at the opening of the Pokémon Center Shibuya in Tokyo), or as a reward at some official tournaments (like the famous No.2 Trainer card given to participants of the 2006 World Championships and sold for a mere €97,100 in 2021).

At the release of some video games (like the gorgeous Arceus V given to those who pre-ordered Pokémon Legends: Arceus), at contests run by the Japanese franchise (like the famous Illustrator Pikachu from CoroCoro given to the winners of an illustration contest), or with new displays in promotional boxes (like the very recent Espeon Promo 189/S-P).

How do you tell a promo card from a normal card?

On the most recent cards it's very easy to tell whether a card is a promo: a box with the word PROMO appears at the bottom left of the serial number (or sometimes the bottom right). Promo cards can also be obvious when they're collaborations with another brand or artist, since the illustration style is unique (like Mario / Luigi Pikachu and the recent Yu Nagaba Pikachu).

On older cards the difference is less obvious; sometimes only the expansion symbol changes (like the Illustrator CoroCoro card, where the symbol is a paintbrush).

Why are promotional Pokémon cards so popular?

Being hard to get makes them very appealing to the most loyal TCG collectors. Who hasn't dreamed of having a rare, unique card in their binder to show off to friends? On top of that, most of these cards have a unique design that makes them visually striking, like the Munch cards based on Edvard Munch's famous painting The Scream, which are my personal favorites!

There's also a financial / investment side: promo cards are produced in limited quantities, which drives their value up over time.

In short, as you'll quickly gather, these cards have made and keep making TCG history, helping our favorite franchise grow in popularity and making our passion better known around the world.

If you want to get your hands on a promo card, check out our Pokémon Boxes, most of which include one, or head to the Single Cards section, which we update regularly so you can find the card of your dreams.
